#2,354 Artwork Redux.

I’m updating our bedroom and decided I want to frame some old figure sketches I did in college, but they were all done in red and I want black. A big window makes a fine lightbox to make a duplicate just the way I want. #2,313 Cooking.

My parents’ garden is cranking out more squash than they know what to do with so today they dropped off a few pounds of it along with fresh green onions and tonight I did the prep to make it easy to throw together Garden and Gun’s squash casserole recipe tomorrow for the cookout. And if there’s gonna be a cookout, I might as well bring a dessert too, right? And I remembered Southern Living’s recipe for strawberry icebox pretzel pie that looked pretty simple, so I went ahead and made that too and stuck it in the fridge. I swear […]

#2,303 Cream of Tomato Chicken Orzo Soup.

I know how lame this sounds. I know. But basically my favorite place to eat in NYC is always Hale and Hearty, the chain of soup restaurants, because soup is my favorite food and I can think of nothing better than a place with a million different kinds to try every day. Every time we’re in New York I eat there at least twice and I always go back to my old Italianish favorite: cream of tomato with chicken and orzo. I got a hankering for it today and decided to try and make it on my own… And I’ll […]

#2,264 Biscuits + Boil.

I woke up with a hankering for Freeman’s buttermilk biscuits and had the ingredients to do it, so I indulged a little: I could afford to eat such a hearty breakfast because I knew this afternoon I wouldn’t be eating much at the first crawfish boil of year. Crawfish parties are fun, but I’m not much on spicy food, so I had to store up for the day, right?? This picture is funny because we are wearing the same shirt from Madewell, the same sunglasses, too. When you’re best friends as long as we have been–your closets look the same.

#2,547 Judi’s Chicken Noodle Soup.

It must be a Christmas miracle (or we’re burnt out on IHOP), but I found time to cook supper again tonight and it hit the spot just like yesterday did. Last week, our dear friend Judi gave a huge pot of her delicious chicken noodle soup to the 6 of us at the Mercantile because she knew we weren’t getting much time for home cooked meals. Our precious friend and former mayor, Mrs. Susan, brought us all dinner a couple nights later—proof that life in a small town is the sweetest life there is. These women knew that opening the […]

#2,546 Rustic Ratatouille Pasta.

Claude have mercy it’s been SO LONG since I made the time to make a meal at home, so when we closed the Mercantile at 5, I headed home to make something I’ve been craving: ratatouille. Not the picture-perfect variety you see on Pinterest though (ain’t nobody got time for that)—but a rustic, simplified, Erin-fied version that uses the classic ingredients cooked into a hearty stew and served over angel hair pasta. You’ll wanna pin this one. Rustic Ratatouille Pasta 2 zucchinis, sliced 1 eggplant, quartered and sliced 1 white onion, chopped  2 red bell peppers, chopped 1 container of fresh mushrooms, […]

#2,456 French Onion Soup.

This week and next are going to be some of our hardest weeks left of filming season 1, and I’m in disbelief that we’re already so close to the end of filming. We started in May and on November 1, we’ll have our final reveal and that will be the end of this first leg of our journey. Time is flying, the early mornings and long days on my feet will catch up to me in about 10 days when we finish this first gauntlet of house tours, demo days and interviews about our new homeowners. Tonight I made it […]

#2,441 Girl Time + Granola.

I spent a while visiting with Mammaw this afternoon, and I regret so much the way it’s become only a once or twice a week at best visit I get to make since we started filming the show. She’s in bed by 7 every night, just when we’re leaving work, so it’s been hard for our schedules to work. Saturdays and Sundays are my only chance lately, and when I walked through the door this afternoon, her eyes lit up like when I would come to her house as a little child, ready to build forts and make pie crust […]

#2,301 Sunday Walk + Summer Supper.

After an attempt at a nap (that, sadly, didn’t take because I got distracted Googling about the USS Arizona and also the O.J. Simpson trial and couldn’t fall asleep even though I was very sleepy—typical Sunday afternoon problem), we decided to take a really long walk while the spring breeze was whipping around the trees and the sun was shining. So much beauty at every turn, around every street corner. There are 2 houses in the neighborhood that feel like siblings to ours and this is one of them: We walked past the gorgeous brick prairie style home I’ve been in love with since high […]

#2,285 Bird Nests.

With Easter 2 sleeps away, I’ve had something from childhood on my mind all day that I remember from a party in elementary school. Someone’s mama, maybe mine, brought these candies that were delicious little bird nests with candy eggs nestled on top. I posted about it on facebook, and lots of people told me they made something like that called haystacks, but it involved butterscotch and/or peanut butter and I knew that wasn’t in there because these looked kind of frosted in white. I did some googling and found the recipe I recalled, except I added one extra ingredient to […]
