#2,652 Rain and Wind.

Tonight we decided to go home and cook dinner after the gym, a departure from our usual dinner out on weeknights. We opened the windows and the back door to the screened porch and I turned on the Ryan Adams channel on Pandora. Soon, a storm blew in out of nowhere and the wind rushing through our kitchen felt cool and wet, like standing near the base of a waterfall. Every night, without fail, Ben asks me to tell him the things I’m worried about. To make a list. So I sat at my stool near the window, beside him […]

#2,645 The Last Normal Day.

I spent the day at the Mercantile with Mallorie and Emily, doing all we could to get the last kinks worked out in our brand new website before we gave the developers the greenlight to flip the switch. And now, here she is, our brand new online home. Soon, this journal will get a little makeover to go along with it, but for a little while it’ll stay the way it’s been. I’m excited to see it return to its old name that some of you longtime readers will remember: Make Something Good Today. But for now, there is this, and […]

#2,643 Precious Things.

Today I stayed home because I wasn’t feeling great. Ben took me for a ride in the country to get some fresh air with the windows down and the sunroof open and while it didn’t take away the rumbly feelings in my stomach, it made me feel so deeply in love with him, holding onto  his arm, thick as a tree trunk, listening to David Gray and Chris Stapleton sing songs that we love. We got back home after singing in the car. It’s been so so so very long since I sat at my piano and played a song. […]

#2,625 No Worries.

Last week was a bit stressful for us with so much going going going and changes in our work. I found myself feeling anxious for no real reason in particular, just low-grade nervousness that comes, for me, with sleep deprivation and being away from home and in the company of folks I’m new to meeting. It’s a genetic cross to bear, this worry-wartism I work so hard to keep smothered.  Last night as I was getting ready for bed I told Ben about how I was feeling and he was a little frustrated at first because he is a fixer, […]

#2,615 He’s Home.

Ben was away on business for the last 2 days and made it home last night just in time for dinner with everybody. It’s not news to anyone that we’re together all the time, literally 24 hours a day, and when he leaves and I stay behind, I’m always surprised by how restless I feel. I walked into Lee’s for lunch and was asked 3 times, “Where’s Ben?”  In the grocery store by myself, I go unnoticed. There’s no conversation unless I see someone I know. With him beside me, there’s no mistaking us–the giant with the beard and the […]

#2,611 My Valentine.

As is his tradition, on special days Ben wakes up early and sneaks out of our room to begin the day with a surprise. I smelled breakfast cooking when I opened my eyes, and found that he had visited the bakery and brought home my favorite, a raspberry danish, and was cooking eggs and sausage for himself (and for me to share, if I wanted—reasons he is a better person than me, the person who never shares French fries). He gave me a card that made me laugh out loud. And I made him a t-shirt that made him laugh out […]

#2,583 Yard Construction.

With sunny, summery weather as far as the forecast can see and the clock ticking down to when we lose control of our schedules again, Ben and I are finally committing to building a little shed / huge dog house behind our garage for Baker and the push mower since Chevy has had his own since he was a puppy. I was Ben’s assistant, passing him the nail gun, reading the measurements. I feel grateful that I get to spend my days with him, no matter what. And I feel disadvantaged when he’s away, like I’m not myself, and I’m […]

#2,527 Traveling Anniversary.

We spent today, our 8th wedding anniversary, in the car going to meetings in Tupelo and then driving home, but we made sure to take some time to celebrate the only way we could—by eating well for lunch with Sam, Lyn and the kids at Cracker Barrel on our caravan south, then with supper at Tabella saying goodbye to the very last 2 producers from the show who have now 100% officially wrapped out all business matters of Home Town season 1. Since we celebrated all last week by getting to be in NYC, I was so happy to come […]

#2,389 Lunch + Take Heart.

Today is one of the last regular lunch dates we will have for a couple months since we start filming block 2 next week, and I relished it very much. He always knows what I like to order (the French onion soup) and never forgets to add 4 pickles on the side. He’s had a weird twitchy eyelid and muscle cramps lately, so he ordered bananas for his side, which was oddly funny to me.  We talked about regular things and saw a few friends having lunch too. And I so appreciate life in this small town, where our comforting […]

#2,246 When A Man Loves A Woman.

Saturday night I posted this on Instagram (a recurring fun question I like to pop from time to time):  And was surprised by my mama’s answer: “Andy Garcia in When A Man Loves A Woman.”   1. I had no idea she had ever liked Andy Garcia, period. 2. I’ve never seen that movie and Meg Ryan is in it! How have I missed that one?   So tonight we had a movie night with my parents and it broke my heart and made me feel all lovey and thankful for a happy marriage and parents who gave us a healthy, […]
