#2,425 Sickness and in Health.

It’s kind of hilarious that in the same week, Ben and I have both gotten down in our backs: for him, a sudden twist of his back with a lot of weight at the gym ended up with a snap-crack-pop and a swollen disc. For me: my sciatic nerve is being weird again, and I never know when it will strike. Today it’s shooting paint in my right leg when I take a step, yesterday it was my left. The great news is: we had a half day of filming today and no filming tomorrow through Sunday when we get […]

#2,414 Sorting Laundry.

I read this poem in my high school AP English textbook and even though I was too young and inexperienced to relate to it, it made my heart seize and I imagined in that instant the feeling of having a life with someone like that. Sunday nights, Ben lugs the clean laundry baskets into the living room and we sit side by side, watching Parenthood, folding and sorting together, putting it all away so we have clean clothes for the very busy week. “Sorting Laundry” by Elisavietta Ritchie Folding clothes,  I think of folding you into my life. Our king-sized […]

#2,413 Dating.

Lately, we have been so content to spend all our time together, just the two of us. In the years since we’ve been together, we seemed most often to find ourselves spending dinners that went late into the night with our dearest friends, talking about everything and nothing–an unending real life Seinfeld episode, just the way we liked it.  But these days we’ve found ourselves staying home more, making a date for two on the quiet nights we are away from set or the wood shop. The busier life gets, the more I’m drawing in to home and to Ben, […]

#2,404 My 32nd Birthday.

Today I am 32 years old. At 6:45 am I ate the best almond croissant of my life, warm out of Sweet Somethings’ oven because Big didn’t want our birthday tradition to die just because the French patisserie closed. Mrs. Jamie went and learned the recipe from the baker so she could master French pastries, too.  There was another surprise tonight, but I couldn’t think of a thing in the world that I wanted.  But true to form, he topped himself. He built a cedar caddy for my fancy new almost-here bathtub and has started the new coffee table with […]

#2,390 A Bath.

It’s been 2 months since we started the renovation, and it will be 2 weeks until we have our bathroom again. Soaking in the tub at bedtime has been my ritual since 5th grade and I’ve been missing it. We’ve been filming for 3 weeks, and I’ve never been so tired after being on my feet for 12 hour days. Tonight when we wrapped Big told me we were going to my parents’ for supper. I didn’t notice he packed my pajamas until we got there and he went to mama’s fancy bathroom and started making a huge, fluffy bubble […]

#2,380 Date Night.

We had to run an errand in Hattiesburg after wrapping for the day which of course landed us at Tabella, our favorite, for a date night. We shared salads and meatballs, talking about the first week of filming (so tired) and how it felt to be back in the swing of things (like we never stopped). Earlier this week, we were talking about Darling magazine with Lindsay, about how cool their mission is to make content for women that’s uplifting and encouraging. And Ben told her his thoughts on feminism I suppose you could call it: "I guess because I […]

#2,312 Handyman.

We’ve recently started doing lots of odd jobs around our own house that we put off all those months during filming season one and the press tour that followed this spring. Now that we have some time at home, we’ve been so busy fixing this and that. It makes me especially thankful that Big is handy in so many ways–he always knows how to do what needs to be done, and I feel a swell of pride seeing his work. After sweating through the morning and eating lunch out at my parents, we came back into town for another swim. […]

#2,652 Rain and Wind.

Tonight we decided to go home and cook dinner after the gym, a departure from our usual dinner out on weeknights. We opened the windows and the back door to the screened porch and I turned on the Ryan Adams channel on Pandora. Soon, a storm blew in out of nowhere and the wind rushing through our kitchen felt cool and wet, like standing near the base of a waterfall. Every night, without fail, Ben asks me to tell him the things I’m worried about. To make a list. So I sat at my stool near the window, beside him […]

#2,645 The Last Normal Day.

I spent the day at the Mercantile with Mallorie and Emily, doing all we could to get the last kinks worked out in our brand new website before we gave the developers the greenlight to flip the switch. And now, here she is, our brand new online home. Soon, this journal will get a little makeover to go along with it, but for a little while it’ll stay the way it’s been. I’m excited to see it return to its old name that some of you longtime readers will remember: Make Something Good Today. But for now, there is this, and […]

#2,643 Precious Things.

Today I stayed home because I wasn’t feeling great. Ben took me for a ride in the country to get some fresh air with the windows down and the sunroof open and while it didn’t take away the rumbly feelings in my stomach, it made me feel so deeply in love with him, holding onto  his arm, thick as a tree trunk, listening to David Gray and Chris Stapleton sing songs that we love. We got back home after singing in the car. It’s been so so so very long since I sat at my piano and played a song. […]
