#1,819 The Christmas Lights (Ben’s 10 Year Edition).

We’re packing our bags and leaving on a jet plane for a few days, so tonight is Ben’s last (and somewhat abbreviated) guest post on our anniversary week. To read about how things were going from my side of the story that night, click here. To find out what happened next, read the rest of the story that I posted in 2010 by clicking here, here and here in that order. Even though it was 10 years ago, we never forget to make a big deal out of this particular week. I don’t even think of our wedding anniversary as such […]

#1,818 Our First Date (Ben’s 10 Year Edition).

Today, Ben is guest posting about our first date on the 3rd day of knowing each other, during which I spent part of it with the guy I was actually kind of dating at the time. I know how bad that sounds, but we weren’t serious, so cut me some slack. You can read my 2010 post about this night here. So, today, Erin and I listened to Damien Rice all day which prompted her to locate the old “Drive Safely” mix CD. We added the mix to her computer and to both of our phones. We took a little […]

#1,817 Goulet Day (Ben’s 10 Year Edition).

Continued from Ben’s guest blog yesterday, he’ll tell you about day 2 of the 6 days of our courtship from way back in 2004. I’m crushing on him all over again. To read my (fangirl) side of the story written in 2010, click here. So, Chase, Barron, Austin Smith, me, and a few other guys all took Miss Green’s psychology class the fall semester of 2004. It was a good elective and we heard she was a cool teacher, and we thought, “Why not?” Mrs. Green would use all sorts of resources for teaching. One of these resources was a […]

#1,816 Two Arms, Please (Ben’s 10 Year Edition).

Today is the 10 year anniversary of the day Ben and I stopped being acquaintances and started being engaged. I’m joking, kind of. As he likes to lend his voice from time to time, he feels like telling y’all how it went from his side with a guest post. So, without further adieu…  You all know the story of love week. You’ve read it here, or maybe you’ve heard Erin tell it, or maybe you were there for it. It’s a great story, but not many people know it from my point of view. So, I asked Erin if I could do a […]

#346 I Love You.

6 years ago tonight, Ben said something to me that would change both of our lives forever. It confirmed every feeling we both were having, it let me know that the future would be different than I might have imagined. It was our last week of the semester, then we would be going home for a month of Christmas break. We both knew the 4 hour distance would be heartbreaking so soon after we had just gotten to know each other. We were already mourning the time apart. We were sitting in my car. Damien Rice’s Cheers Darling was playing. […]

#345 Gloria.

So you’ve surely had enough of our story, and because not much happened on December 12, 2004 (I worked, then we took my car to the car wash in Ellisville where Ben picked me up and carried me around and kissed me in public like a crazy person and I loved every second of it), and because it’s my very own blog and I can interrupt nostalgia week if I feel like it—I have to talk about the Christmas program at church this morning. With brass and percussion orchestra, it was one of the most epic musical moments I’ve ever […]

#343 Christmas Lights.

After a day spent in the yearbook office with Ben who gamely sat and talked to me while I worked, I was waiting on the sidewalk in front of the dorms. It was just getting completely dark, my breath was making fog in front of my face and my wool peacoat was barely insulating me from the wind. Charlie pulled up in his white Silverado and I climbed in. We were going to the pharmacy Christmas party at Dayne’s and I was anxious about how the conversation would go. Good thing, he didn’t seem to be miffed by my little […]

#342 First Date.

After a school day that felt like it was years long, Ben and I had made plans to go looking for a spot to paint one more time. I was running out of time to get the thing done so I couldn’t hang out with him otherwise. He drove me all over the county looking for the perfect place, but nothing looked right to me. We settled on painting the field and trees beside the lake on campus, but I realized I didn’t have everything I needed to paint. I left my palette back in my dorm, but Ben came […]

#341 The yearbook pictures (or, Goulet Day).

“They’re after me.” Early Wednesday morning, December 8, 2004 my phone beeped and woke me up with this simple text message from Ben Napier. I relished the opportunity to call and ask (with a gravelly, sleepy voice that I tried my best to disguise)   “Who’s after you?” He told me it was an inside joke with he and his roommate Chase—from a psychology video that semester where a crazy person thought monsters (called the Casheestees) were after them. Well, okay. I thought as long as you texted me, I’m thrilled that the Casheestees are after you. Can you imagine […]

#340 Two Arms, Please.

On December 7, 2004, I woke up and went to class like any other Tuesday. In a yearbook meeting, it had been decided by the staff that we would write 10 articles for the book on the most interesting people on campus. The first choice was unanimously Ben Napier, and I said “I can be there for the photoshoot if I need to be. It’s no big deal.” I was thrilled by the idea of spending an afternoon with him, whether he paid me any attention or not. I mean, my roommate and I would have dinner in the union […]
