#2,310 Just A Swingin’.

We are waiting for the custom cushions our friend Adam is making for the new porch swing bed Ben built, but today may have been our last chance to enjoy what felt like spring since tomorrow summer temps look to be here to stay. But today. It was 46° when we woke up and all day long, in the shade a breeze could give you a chill. I was working on staining our new front door and Ben brought the cushions from our sofa out to the porch and tossed them on the swing for me to take a short […]

#2,306 Home with Rain and Paint.

The rain poured all day long and I had nothing on my agenda except to paint while a tea with lemon candle burned and thunder rumbled quietly and Ben tumbled and knocked around in the attic installing the supports for the new porch bed he made for me. I believe I’ll put these paintings in the shop in a week or two. They feel like summer and sunshine and I like that very much.

#2,298 Missed You, Sippi.

We’re home to stay for a good long while and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face seeing our familiar, slow, quiet, blue and green world through the windshield as we crossed the state line and pulled back into Laurel tonight. We were greeted by Josh and Rebecca and their brand new baby boy, Thomas, our dear old college friends who are in town for the night.  Tonight, I’m in my bed in my room in my house and I’m thankful for wings, but I’m just as thankful for roots.

#2,286 Rainy Organizing.

We were under a blanket of heavy storm clouds from the time we woke up this morning, threatening without so much as a rumble. After church, the rain began to fall and only stopped for a couple hours this afternoon, and for whatever reason… Being at home in a storm made me feel like cleaning up the desk junk drawer and the drawer where I keep letters and cards from friends and family over the years. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for so long, but who in the world makes time for that? I’ll tell you who. I […]

#2,658 Sunday Morning.

It was a late night and a late morning, so we had church on the porch with croissants, the Bible and a devotional.  The bells were ringing at St. John’s and our neighbors kept trickling past in their dresses and ties, being mindful of the ancient live oak roots that have made the sidewalks a little treacherous in high heels. It’s gotten so warm this spring, the sweet olives’ blooming has already passed and it feels like summer is already coming. I made an actual list of all the things I wanted to do in the sunshine today because it […]

#2,652 Rain and Wind.

Tonight we decided to go home and cook dinner after the gym, a departure from our usual dinner out on weeknights. We opened the windows and the back door to the screened porch and I turned on the Ryan Adams channel on Pandora. Soon, a storm blew in out of nowhere and the wind rushing through our kitchen felt cool and wet, like standing near the base of a waterfall. Every night, without fail, Ben asks me to tell him the things I’m worried about. To make a list. So I sat at my stool near the window, beside him […]

#2,649 The End of the Day.

As our schedules are becoming suddenly more demanding, it means I have to find ways to delegate my work at the Mercantile as much as I can. It was a brain busting task to work on hour after hour, creating systems that my team can use to do the work. When I left today I felt so spent, I couldn’t use my words. It happens sometimes when I spend long intervals at a desk in my own head. I just was used up. I went to dinner and then I went home and had a long soak in a hot […]

#2,633 Porch Lunch.

The weather felt like California today, which has me missing those days we spent in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara this time last year. The closest I could get to that feeling in south Mississippi involved a toasted Cubano, a cream soda, and a breeze that warrants a light sweater and welcomes bare feet.

#2,612 Knocking Around The House.

While Big was doing manly stuff like delivering a truck engine and listening to country music: In case anyone wondered what #Mississippi and #Alabama looks like from the cab of my '62. I made a neat little video with Long white line by @sturgillsimpson, but Instagram wouldn't let me post it with the music. Son Volt is just as good, and nobody can say I'm a bandwagon fan. ? A post shared by Ben Napier | Scotsman Co. (@scotsman.co) on Feb 15, 2017 at 9:21pm PST I was busy doing some things too. Like, for instance, taking a plumeria bubble bath […]

#2,602 Super Sunday.

You probably know this about us by now, but we aren’t much on  pro sports. We don’t even watch college sports really–Ole Miss football and Duke basketball are the exceptions, which means Super Bowl Sunday is just another Sunday to us. After church, a short nap (for Ben–sleeping in the afternoon eludes me the older I get), we decided to take a quick trip down to Hattiesburg so I could find comfy boots for walking on our trip up to NYC in a few days.  I was hungry by 4:00 and nearly caved walking past the Auntie Anne’s pretzel kiosk […]
