#2,496 Pancake Day 2017.

If you order a copy of Good Grit here you can read all about Pancake Day: Laurel’s sweetest annual tradition that we’ve all been doing for decades. Everyone you’ve ever known your entire life comes to the old YWCO and gets in line together to have all you can eat pancakes and sausage before the Christmas parade starts. Every year, the photos are the same, we all just look a little older and wiser. This is how Christmas begins in our hometown. This year was an especially good one, since we are celebrating the one year anniversary of opening the Laurel Mercantile Co. This […]

#2,492 Appreciating the Quiet.

We’re getting close to the end of filming and while the days are still a bit long, I’m finding more quiet moments as the saws are done and it’s now the quiet work of painting and cleaning that’s left on each of the houses. Tonight when we wrapped I couldn’t wait to get home and into the bathtub then into my pajamas. All I wanted for supper were two Eggo waffles with real butter and Blackburn’s syrup, while Ben had picked a steak up from the butcher just for him. And I’m soaking up every quiet moment before our lives […]

#2,490 Home Again.

We made it back home just in time to pick out our Christmas tree at the Mercantile. We didn’t have the energy to actually decorate it tonight, but there’s always tomorrow! For now, there is a Chinese carry out and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Which I have somehow never seen until tonight. P.S. We are one gallon of milk away from the last shoot day of season 2. I really kind of want to cry.

#2,468 Party Animals.

It’s been a long week.  Next week we will enter the final stretch of filming with 1 month left of season 2. The time change will mean the cameras start rolling even earlier, around 6 am, and we will lose our light earlier in the day, accelerating our schedule even as I get closer to the end of pregnancy (and more tired).  For now, we are keeping our heads above water thanks to the amazing team we work with, and these days (and indefinitely, as a baby becomes part of our world), weekends are no longer a time for socializing. […]

#2,452 The Luxury of Sundays.

Sunday. The only day of rest we get in a week, and we savor it, every last crumb of it, soak it up into our bones to last us through the week, when we are running on fumes by Friday afternoon. And I want to always keep it this way, the day we pray and worship and fold the laundry and wear pajamas in the afternoon. Because these days it’s the best luxury of all: time and rest. I wish I could buy it but I can’t, which makes me all the more grateful for it when it comes along.

#2,430 Freezer Food.

Let me tell you what I’m thankful for. In February when I made my brother’s birthday spaghetti and meatballs, I had the the foresight to make double and put it in the freezer.  Tonight we had my best recipe without an ounce of effort: I had a soak in the new bathtub. And a new candle that smells heavenly came in the mail… It’s a little over the top how weird I am about being here, at home, where it smells and feels and tastes so good.

#2,416 Soup Supper.

Before we ran out the door to our first reveal of the season this morning, we threw together vegetable beef stew in the crockpot and the smell was the best welcome home at the end of the day. Jesse and Lauren came over to eat with us with Sufjan Stevens on the radio and a cold breeze that made the wind chimes dance. Not surprisingly, I found myself (and my tired back) in my favorite spot on this earth–swinging under a cable knit blanket and Ben’s hand swaying me (almost) to sleep.

#2,412 Catnapping.

As we near the first reveals of season 2 construction is winding down on the first block of filming while it’s still in full swing at our own house, but that means I’m finding 30 minute windows in the afternoons to take a tiny siesta on the porch (since inside my house is a noisy construction site) on the swing Ben made with the cushions Adam made, and it’s become my favorite thing to do in the whole world.

#2,347 Rest.

I woke up with another one of those headaches today that wouldn’t give up. After church I went to the couch and stayed there until 4:00 when I finally started to feel like moving around. But with the grueling schedule of filming coming up in a couple weeks, I’m grateful for a day like this to be still and quiet and absorb the feeling of home on a day when I need to rest.

#2,310 Just A Swingin’.

We are waiting for the custom cushions our friend Adam is making for the new porch swing bed Ben built, but today may have been our last chance to enjoy what felt like spring since tomorrow summer temps look to be here to stay. But today. It was 46° when we woke up and all day long, in the shade a breeze could give you a chill. I was working on staining our new front door and Ben brought the cushions from our sofa out to the porch and tossed them on the swing for me to take a short […]
