#2,307 Swing.

For my birthday, several years ago, Ben made me a porch bed that I loved dearly. It’s served us well, even though the mattress became a haven for the neighborhood cats and it started to scratch the porch floor every time we rolled it aside to clean. After Bill and Jody’s episode aired I told him how badly I wanted him to make us a swing like theirs, and today I got my wish. I can’t wait to see it finished with cushions from our friend, Adam Trest! It feels so fancy and… glidey if you know what I mean?

#2,652 Rain and Wind.

Tonight we decided to go home and cook dinner after the gym, a departure from our usual dinner out on weeknights. We opened the windows and the back door to the screened porch and I turned on the Ryan Adams channel on Pandora. Soon, a storm blew in out of nowhere and the wind rushing through our kitchen felt cool and wet, like standing near the base of a waterfall. Every night, without fail, Ben asks me to tell him the things I’m worried about. To make a list. So I sat at my stool near the window, beside him […]

#2,650 Step 1 Done + Mr. Clean.

We’ve been working on a new project that’s in the very early stages for a couple months now and today I finished the first step in a long series of steps while Ben was busy in the garage assembling a basketball goal for the backyard. I came home feeling triumphant and ready to tackle cleaning the house and found Ben scrubbing the bathroom, the Roomba rolling through the living room, the laundry in the dryer. I was so grateful I felt like crying.  I want so badly to change the bathtub that came with our house, but I know it […]

#2,645 The Last Normal Day.

I spent the day at the Mercantile with Mallorie and Emily, doing all we could to get the last kinks worked out in our brand new website before we gave the developers the greenlight to flip the switch. And now, here she is, our brand new online home. Soon, this journal will get a little makeover to go along with it, but for a little while it’ll stay the way it’s been. I’m excited to see it return to its old name that some of you longtime readers will remember: Make Something Good Today. But for now, there is this, and […]

#2,643 Precious Things.

Today I stayed home because I wasn’t feeling great. Ben took me for a ride in the country to get some fresh air with the windows down and the sunroof open and while it didn’t take away the rumbly feelings in my stomach, it made me feel so deeply in love with him, holding onto  his arm, thick as a tree trunk, listening to David Gray and Chris Stapleton sing songs that we love. We got back home after singing in the car. It’s been so so so very long since I sat at my piano and played a song. […]

#2,629 Plugging Away on Saturday.

Lots of travel is on our calendar soon and we’re developing so many new products at the Mercantile, so Ben and I have been spending every waking moment at the studio working on our projects. As our director Jim would say, “we’re running out of runway!” Today was a really satisfying, productive day spent working together on something we’re excited about and putting our whole hearts into.  Hearing him working in the next room always makes me feel deeply grateful that  we found work that feels so right for us, but most of all, because we get to share it.

#2,625 No Worries.

Last week was a bit stressful for us with so much going going going and changes in our work. I found myself feeling anxious for no real reason in particular, just low-grade nervousness that comes, for me, with sleep deprivation and being away from home and in the company of folks I’m new to meeting. It’s a genetic cross to bear, this worry-wartism I work so hard to keep smothered.  Last night as I was getting ready for bed I told Ben about how I was feeling and he was a little frustrated at first because he is a fixer, […]

#2,615 He’s Home.

Ben was away on business for the last 2 days and made it home last night just in time for dinner with everybody. It’s not news to anyone that we’re together all the time, literally 24 hours a day, and when he leaves and I stay behind, I’m always surprised by how restless I feel. I walked into Lee’s for lunch and was asked 3 times, “Where’s Ben?”  In the grocery store by myself, I go unnoticed. There’s no conversation unless I see someone I know. With him beside me, there’s no mistaking us–the giant with the beard and the […]

#2,611 My Valentine.

As is his tradition, on special days Ben wakes up early and sneaks out of our room to begin the day with a surprise. I smelled breakfast cooking when I opened my eyes, and found that he had visited the bakery and brought home my favorite, a raspberry danish, and was cooking eggs and sausage for himself (and for me to share, if I wanted—reasons he is a better person than me, the person who never shares French fries). He gave me a card that made me laugh out loud. And I made him a t-shirt that made him laugh out […]

#2,602 Super Sunday.

You probably know this about us by now, but we aren’t much on  pro sports. We don’t even watch college sports really–Ole Miss football and Duke basketball are the exceptions, which means Super Bowl Sunday is just another Sunday to us. After church, a short nap (for Ben–sleeping in the afternoon eludes me the older I get), we decided to take a quick trip down to Hattiesburg so I could find comfy boots for walking on our trip up to NYC in a few days.  I was hungry by 4:00 and nearly caved walking past the Auntie Anne’s pretzel kiosk […]
