#2,463 Protectors.

We went to see Mammaw today at her nursing home. She’s been declining, I’m sad to say. She’s sleeping most of the day and night and has mostly lost her appetite, but insists she’s feeling “good, good.” When we walked in this evening, she was sound asleep in bed with her supper on the tray in front of her, untouched. We woke her up gently and asked if she was hungry. She said no, but I started to spoon feed her soup and she said it was actually “pretty good.” One bite of of her sandwich was “plenty” and half […]

#2,459 Together.

We are in the midst of the most grueling schedule of our lives and we’re prioritizing things we’ve never had to before: clean clothes, dishes, family, the Mercantile, our friends. Those things used to be the given that everything else moved around, but because of Helen’s impending arrival, season 2 that we were going to have 6 months to make is being packed into 4.5 months. Which changes your life, and the things you’ve always done and took for granted now seem luxurious. It’s harder on our entire amazing, talented, gracious team, and we are only a small part of […]

#2,457 Old is Good.

I know that sometimes old cars leak power steering fluid. And sometimes you have to flush said fluid on your lunch break. But as long as Ben is around, ready to strip out of his nice button down on his 10 minute break to fix it, we’ll keep on enjoying our solid steel and FM radio and feel like kids on Christmas morning every time we drive it.

#2,451 Things I’ve Relished.

We’ve had several months of the sweetest secrecy and radio silence about the most important thing that’s ever happened to us. I’ve relished so much about it, but most of all, the way Ben has been caring for Helen and me every minute of every day. From the moment we found out, he’s been so conscious of my every move—so cautious. As it turns out, I do have a condition that puts me at risk for pre-term labor, and his awareness of this has made him into the sweetest protector. He holds my hand, always. He helps me into and out […]

#2,428 Birthday Boy.

Today he turned 34 years old. I have been his girl since he was 21 years old. It feels like yesterday! After breakfast, he opened his little gifts. Books, of course. And a new coat, exactly like an old coat he had. The week before our wedding I bought @scotsman.co the brown coat as a wedding gift. I picked it specifically because I imagined him putting his wedding band inside that zippered pocket before working on saws or engines. Keeping it safe, against his heart. This winter we did so much traveling doing publicity for Home Town, the coat went […]

#2,427 Ben’s Surprise Trip.

Tomorrow Ben turns 34 so this morning when we woke up I told him he had until 4:00 to work in the woodshop, then we were hitting the road for a surprise trip for the evening. I punched the address into GPS and let it navigate while he drove, no clue where it was leading.  He started to realize we were heading to the coast… But until we pulled into Long Beach Harbor and he saw the antique car show on the beach, he didn’t get it. And until we were parking and all his brothers and dad were there […]

#2,426 Magic Mother Goose.

After weeks of visiting my grandmother only to find her sleeping day and night, virtually unresponsive, our family and the doctors assumed she might have had another mini stroke and feared the worst. Even if we could wake her, she would gaze at us blankly, not sure why we were there. Mama and I were shocked to walk in to her room this morning to find her sitting up in a chair, lights on and sun shining through the windows, mostly back to her old self, as if nothing had happened all this time. Her hair was wild with sleep, […]

#2,413 Dating.

Lately, we have been so content to spend all our time together, just the two of us. In the years since we’ve been together, we seemed most often to find ourselves spending dinners that went late into the night with our dearest friends, talking about everything and nothing–an unending real life Seinfeld episode, just the way we liked it.  But these days we’ve found ourselves staying home more, making a date for two on the quiet nights we are away from set or the wood shop. The busier life gets, the more I’m drawing in to home and to Ben, […]

#2,409 Big is Home.

After three days away helping his parents get started on a laundry room renovation, Big finally came home today. I stood in the driveway at my parents’ house waiting for him and my heart leapt when I saw his old Chevy turn the corner. We had ribs and potatoes and green beans at my parents with Clark, Amanda and Walker: And now my world is back on its axis, at home with Ben, folding the laundry together.

#2,404 My 32nd Birthday.

Today I am 32 years old. At 6:45 am I ate the best almond croissant of my life, warm out of Sweet Somethings’ oven because Big didn’t want our birthday tradition to die just because the French patisserie closed. Mrs. Jamie went and learned the recipe from the baker so she could master French pastries, too.  There was another surprise tonight, but I couldn’t think of a thing in the world that I wanted.  But true to form, he topped himself. He built a cedar caddy for my fancy new almost-here bathtub and has started the new coffee table with […]
