#2,329 Alabama Day Trip.

We ran over to Birmingham for a quick 2 hour meeting with the editorial team at Good Grit magazine to discuss something really cool that’s coming up this fall that’s dear to our hearts! And afterward had time for a super fast stop at the Alabama Farmer’s Market to bring home a bushel of those famous Chilton County peaches. I love a good farmer’s market. Don’t you? P.S. We’ve gotten several requests for a smaller Carson Chef’s Table, so Ben is accommodating that with a new 4.5 foot long option. If you’ve been looking for a pretty oak kitchen island, […]

#2,328 Fitness Friend.

This is my mama. She is 62 years old and in MUCH better shape than I am. She plays competitive league tennis several times a week, and takes long (BRISK) walks on her off days. She’s been an exercise encourager to me my whole life without ever making me feel guilty, which is a very hard balance to strike between a mother and daughter. The emphasis was never on “don’t get fat” when I was an impressionable and sensitive teenager, it was always “moving your body is good for you!” And while I’ll be the first to tell you I’m […]

#2,327 Annual Indiana.

Our dear friends Lisa, Doug, Emma, Katie, Hayden and Meg made their annual stop in Laurel on their way home to Indiana from the beach and even though it was brief, it was so wonderful to spend some time with them having pancakes for supper and showing them the Mercantile for the first time.

#2,326 Baby Boom.

Somehow, I’ve managed to make it through life without ever watching the movie Baby Boom. I don’t know why I haven’t considering it covers entrepreneurship, small town living and a Grand Wagoneer, but today was the day. And corny as it was at moments, I cried a little bit when Elizabeth called her mama at the end, and cheered for J.C. when she told her mean old boss, “Frankly, if Food Chain can put Country Baby in grocery stores across America, then so can I.“ What a sweet movie for a rainy night at home.

#2,325 Market Beautiful Day 2.

There’s no way to adequately thank all of you who made the journey to Laurel for the Market Beautiful weekend. We met people from as far away as Michigan, California and New York. We hugged so many gracious people who spent their hard earned dollars all over our town and I just want you to know: we are all deeply grateful. I struggle so hard with my introversion and anxiety in crowds and am thankful for each of you who were kind and patient with me. Here I am, hiding in the mop closet with Lindsey and Kim to catch […]

#2,324 Market Beautiful Day 1 + Bowling.

Oh man, y’all. Tonight was incredible! I can’t believe the vintage and handmade vendors who came from as far as New York and California to be part of The Market Beautiful this weekend. Tonight was the early preview party and I did some shopping before the crowds started coming in. I’ve been Instagram friends with several vendors for so long and it was amazing to finally hug their necks today. Tomorrow (today?) June 10 is the big shopping day when tickets will be just $6, so I hope we will see some of y’all there when we meet and greet […]

#2,323 Sleep + The Missourians.

I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately. At 11:00 last night while I was trying to get sleepy, Big started to scratch my head, in that way that makes you feel a shiver all over. I don’t know how long he did that, maybe an hour, and I was drifting in and out of sleep. I woke up at 8:45 this morning, so thankful when I rolled over and looked at the clock. He wasn’t there beside me. He surprised me with a homemade egg McMuffin just a minute later to celebrate sleeping through the night. And I’m grateful for Big […]

#2,322 Florida Talks.

In a few weeks we will get to go back to Wakulla Springs, this time with Jim, Mal, Josh and Em. I got to spend some time today talking and writing about why I love those old Florida towns so much and I remembered the photo I took of the photo my grandmother took of her sisters standing outside the lodge at Wakulla. When I’m there, time stops. I. Can’t wait to get back.

#2,321 The Little House + The Montana Girls.

The library asked Ben and I to kick off their summer vacation program by reading one of our favorite books, of our choosing, to the kids. I imagined something like a half circle of 20 or so children. I grew up coming to this library all summer long, checking out Berenstain Bears, Amelia Bedelia and Goosebumps, getting chocolate Moon Pies from the second floor vending machine, and finding a quiet corner away from the kid section to savor them. It made my heart swell to see so many sweet kids with library cards spending their day here.  For dinner tonight […]

#2,320 The First Day.

This was the first day of work for us both on one of those super secret new projects I was talking about a couple days ago, and it was kind of thrilling to begin instead of just prepping to begin. It feels good to spend time in our studio, in the loft apartment where we began our life together in 2008. It will always have a piece of our hearts and be the place where I feel most creative.
