#2,300 Mama.

She encouraged me to be creative when other mamas encouraged doing what it took to be the most popular. She is tender hearted and smart and never told us we were better than anyone. She’s a writer with a southern voice that reminds me of Fannie Flagg and Lewis Grizzard, my biggest encourager who made art with me after school and sat beside me on the bus to Washington DC in 6th grade when no one else would. I call her 3 times a day to tell her everything and nothing, and we share large Chick-Fil-A fries over lunch a […]

#2,299 Holly.

The last time I saw my friend Holly, she had just finished writing the names of all my family on sycamore and oak leaves for a Thanksgiving dinner last November. I came to pick them up, and walked right into her kitchen–the way she always told me to do. Her home is like a Nancy Meyers film set and the welcome she and Chris give their guests makes you feel like family. She brought me fresh baked baguettes for Christmas once, and it made the best toast I’ve ever eaten. She was a stunningly confident, plucky, lovely woman and one […]

#2,298 Missed You, Sippi.

We’re home to stay for a good long while and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face seeing our familiar, slow, quiet, blue and green world through the windshield as we crossed the state line and pulled back into Laurel tonight. We were greeted by Josh and Rebecca and their brand new baby boy, Thomas, our dear old college friends who are in town for the night.  Tonight, I’m in my bed in my room in my house and I’m thankful for wings, but I’m just as thankful for roots.

#2,297 The Village.

After a long (amazing) day of meetings about some really exciting things that are happening (eventually), we had tonight to ourselves to just spend some time in Greenwich Village, our favorite neighborhood in NYC, before we finally head back home.  We stopped in John Derian’s shops in the East Village that have been an online inspiration to me for so long: We stopped into Three Lives bookstore in the West Village, which is the most charming neighborhood in the whole city if you ask me: And soon it was time to meet up with Lindsey and her brother Craig, and […]

#2,296 30 Rock Day.

Well. We’ve done it. We’ve been on the dang Today show. I got so nervous when we first got there, y’all. I was afraid I would go blank and forget what to talk about.  But Laura and Lynne from HGTV were there with us, talking about back problems and renovations at their houses and before long I forgot about being nervous altogether because we were just visiting with the girls from work. Soon, it was time to go out to the stage. And I saw Jenna and Hoda and Kathie Lee and Dylan and felt SO STARSTRUCK. But soon we […]

#2,295 Today Show.

First things first: we got about 11 hours of sleep–so amazing after the week we had leading up to today! And now, the exciting news about tomorrow… We are gonna be on the Today Show talking about Home Town with Hoda and Kathie Lee at 10 am tomorrow (Wed., May 10)!! Ahhhhh! We had rehearsal this afternoon and it was surreal to stand in that studio.  We spent the evening walking all over Manhattan after dinner at Friend of a Farmer, one of our favorite cozy spots in the city where old wallpaper surrounds you and French music from the […]

#2,294 We Survived.

Somehow, a ton of major things we wanted to do all piled up within hours of each other in the span of 4 days and we’ve been saying for weeks now that if we could get through: 1. The weekend of back-to-back speaking engagements with our first time to do a Mercantile booth at the same time 2. A few hours later get Ben and the boys to Talladega and back safely by 1 am after partying with Ricky in the winner’s circle 3. Then make it to the airport and catch our flight to NYC on time with a […]

#2,293 Ricky Won Talladega.

I was at home in Laurel sound asleep when Ben, Jim, Josh, Ross and Stan left town before the sun came up bound for Talladega where they spent the day on the track, right in the pit with our friend Ricky’s crew and coaches. Ricky has been one of the biggest Scotsman Co. supporters and friend of Ben’s, just a couple of Mississippi boys who have found themselves in the craziest jobs possible. He spent the night at our house a couple months ago and I grilled him about what it’s like to have such a high-risk, super cool job […]

#2,292 Mississippi Mercantile Day 2.

It was another amazing day spent with other Mississippi makers and small business lovers like us, and I was telling the ladies of Mississippi Magazine who put the market on that it really felt like an enormous family reunion. I hugged so many people with stories of how they were connected to Laurel, to our families. I met one family who lived in our house in 1996 and brought photos to show me! I had never seen photos of it from then! Look at our foyer! And our master bath! Ben’s dear old friend Chase and his family even came […]

Day one of our first booth at a market was such a joy! We got to meet so many people and tomorrow we get to do it again. Good thing, because this is the only picture I took all day. And we made it home tonight in time to celebrate Ross’s surprise birthday! Happy 30th ole buddy ole pal!
