#2,310 Good Grit.

We spent the day showing Laura and Shane from Good Grit magazine what exactly is so special about living here in Laurel. We’ve got an exciting collaboration in the works that I can’t wait to share with you, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out more about that!

#2,309 Farewell, Season One.

Tonight we sent off season one with a celebration all over downtown Laurel and a watch party at Laurel Little Theatre, right where we began with the pilot watch party in January 2016. To be surrounded by our family and friends and this sweet community is such a gift to us. This is their show just as much as it’s ours. At the end, Amber and I sang her song, My Hometown, together again just like we did at the end of the finale episode. It felt good to perform on a stage again. It’s been so long! And afterward, because […]

#2,308 Bathroom + Woodshop.

I woke up this morning with my mind made up–I want to renovate our bathroom so we can have a separate tub and shower and so we can access it through our room instead of the hallway. Now I’m obsessively searching the Internet for a very specific sort of bathtub that I hope turns up soon. In other news, I got my first glimpse of the new Scotsman Co. woodshop while Jesse was working on cleaning out the building so they can start moving all the equipment over. And tomorrow (today for most of you reading on Tuesday) is the […]

#2,307 Swing.

For my birthday, several years ago, Ben made me a porch bed that I loved dearly. It’s served us well, even though the mattress became a haven for the neighborhood cats and it started to scratch the porch floor every time we rolled it aside to clean. After Bill and Jody’s episode aired I told him how badly I wanted him to make us a swing like theirs, and today I got my wish. I can’t wait to see it finished with cushions from our friend, Adam Trest! It feels so fancy and… glidey if you know what I mean?

#2,306 Home with Rain and Paint.

The rain poured all day long and I had nothing on my agenda except to paint while a tea with lemon candle burned and thunder rumbled quietly and Ben tumbled and knocked around in the attic installing the supports for the new porch bed he made for me. I believe I’ll put these paintings in the shop in a week or two. They feel like summer and sunshine and I like that very much.

#2,305 Summer Feeling.

Somehow, my internal clock always knows when school is out, and I feel as young as I ever was, with the whole summer and all its delicious adventures stretching out before me.  Today was the first day of 2017 when I got the official summertime feeling and I spent it in my grandmother’s old rocking chairs on Jim and Mal’s back porch with chicken grilling, and then I put my feet in a clear, aquamarine pool so warm it was barely cool enough to feel it. I think tomorrow I will eat a Totino’s pizza and feel 16 again.

#2,304 Breakfast with the Barhams + PS.

Our friend BJ is the singer in a band called American Aquarium and anytime his tours bring him to Mississippi, we try to get together. For the second time in a year, it meant breakfast at our house the morning after his show in Oxford. This time, he brought his darling wife Rachael and we lingered over biscuits and sausage and NASCAR talk. I never imagined these two would have that to talk about someday. And tonight as I was getting sleepy, Ben flipped through the channels and came up on P.S. I Love You with 15 minutes left. Of […]

#2,303 Cream of Tomato Chicken Orzo Soup.

I know how lame this sounds. I know. But basically my favorite place to eat in NYC is always Hale and Hearty, the chain of soup restaurants, because soup is my favorite food and I can think of nothing better than a place with a million different kinds to try every day. Every time we’re in New York I eat there at least twice and I always go back to my old Italianish favorite: cream of tomato with chicken and orzo. I got a hankering for it today and decided to try and make it on my own… And I’ll […]

#2,302 Keeping Our Hometowns Strong.

Remember a few weeks ago when I told you Ben and I spent a whole Sunday afternoon working on a storyboard for something very special? This was the rough draft of those boards: And this is the stunning final product: Tonight on Home Town, you got to visit the foundry with Ben, Josh and Jim. That company has been part of the fabric of our city since the turn of the twentieth century, and we’re lucky to count the Mulloy family as friends. There are factories like this all over America whose communities depend on them, and at Laurel Mercantile we’re proud […]

#2,301 Marathon.

Well, so the Home Town marathon is happening tomorrow (which may actually be today if you’re reading this on Tuesday), and today we finished up shooting and editing our first promo film for the Mercantile that we will release tomorrow and got to go back to where we started at Ross and Laura’s house. You can see their episode when the marathon begins May 16 at noon central and they’ll be airing all day up until the new episode at 9:00 ct. I’m so excited to relive the old episodes since we have 2 more new episodes left of season […]
