#2,336 Thomasville.

On the way home from Florida we decided to make a stop along the way in Thomasville, Georgia at the urging of two Instagram friends who are some of its proudest residents. Annie owns The Bookshelf, the local indie bookstore, and for years we’ve been Instagram friends who bonded over our love for good books, small town living and Kathleen Kelly. Her shop is such a dream. We each bought new books and I can’t wait to get cozy in my own bed for the first time in days and start reading while the rain taps on the window. Because […]

#2,335 Rainy Wakulla.

It rained and it rained and it rained while a tropical storm system pushed across Florida, and it did not stop us from having a perfect day.  I like being here knowing this was my grandmother and her sisters’ summer place too. I’m trying to write the fireplace and Ivory soap smell of the halls on my memory, the crisp edge of the griddle cakes, the whippoorwills creaking at the edge of the springs, the cold muck of river sand and silt between my toes, to last me until next year.

#2,334 Wakulla Getaway.

Just for a minute, to get away from the craziness in Laurel, we’re spending a day at Wakulla with the Mercantile framily. Every summer, we vacation in 1937: marble floors, no TVs. Every summer, when the rain pours on the red tile roof we open the windows to listen. It’s going to be storming all day tomorrow but that’s okay. I’ve got a good book.

#2,333 Father’s Day.

I got to spend a day at the beach with my daddy, who had amazing swim trunks in the 80s when we were little: He would carry me into the waves on his hip, always keeping my head above water, keeping me safe and showing me the world. These days, he’s into reading more than swimming, but so am I. I’m very lucky that I get to spend so much time with him now as a grown up. It’s good to be just 8 minutes down the road. Ben and I went down to the water for a few hours […]

#2,332 Work and Play Beach Day.

After a long walk on the beach when we woke up: We took a boat ride with my parents and their friends, the Huffs, to lunch because I couldn’t live without Mexican Garbage from Tacky Jack’s. There was still work to do after a couple hours in the sunshine, but it’s not so bad working when you can hear the waves and seagulls outside your window. P.S. I never could’ve imagined that so many of you would be kind enough to buy my artwork. Today we added these new super size watercolors to the online shop and I can’t believe […]

#2,331 Summer Vacation.

We have one more chance to get out of town before the cameras start rolling on season 2, and so today we did just that. It’ll be so good to feel the sand and salt for a few days.

#2,330 Kit Is Back.

The boss lady of our production company is in town this weekend and some of the team has moved back into Laurel, so tonight we got together for BBQ at Dean’s, which was a real delight for Kit in the barren BBQ world of Canada. The thunder has been rumbling outside now for a little while… So I think I’ll hunker down on the couch and watch one of my favorite summertime movies: Head Above Water.

#2,329 Alabama Day Trip.

We ran over to Birmingham for a quick 2 hour meeting with the editorial team at Good Grit magazine to discuss something really cool that’s coming up this fall that’s dear to our hearts! And afterward had time for a super fast stop at the Alabama Farmer’s Market to bring home a bushel of those famous Chilton County peaches. I love a good farmer’s market. Don’t you? P.S. We’ve gotten several requests for a smaller Carson Chef’s Table, so Ben is accommodating that with a new 4.5 foot long option. If you’ve been looking for a pretty oak kitchen island, […]

#2,328 Fitness Friend.

This is my mama. She is 62 years old and in MUCH better shape than I am. She plays competitive league tennis several times a week, and takes long (BRISK) walks on her off days. She’s been an exercise encourager to me my whole life without ever making me feel guilty, which is a very hard balance to strike between a mother and daughter. The emphasis was never on “don’t get fat” when I was an impressionable and sensitive teenager, it was always “moving your body is good for you!” And while I’ll be the first to tell you I’m […]

#2,327 Annual Indiana.

Our dear friends Lisa, Doug, Emma, Katie, Hayden and Meg made their annual stop in Laurel on their way home to Indiana from the beach and even though it was brief, it was so wonderful to spend some time with them having pancakes for supper and showing them the Mercantile for the first time.
