As we do every year, we formally celebrated my birthday with my family for Ole Miss’s first game of the season. I’ve looked forward to this for weeks now and it always feels like time has stopped and everything is the same when I’m on their back porch and the smoker is on its 6th hour with a slab of ribs, and the crickets are creaking and the dog is barking and daddy hits play on the Ole Miss band CD while we play cornhole and wait for the game to start. This is one of the places where I am happiest, doing my family’s tradition on the porch.
There was even an Ole Miss king cake with strawberry filling to really make it the best night ever.
Even though we didn’t win, we could have—it was close. And that’s good enough till next week.
