#1,871 Makeover Day 4 + Clark’s Birthday.

I spent the day cleaning up the worst of the plaster dust at Lucky Luxe while Ben made big strides with the new wainscoting, and this afternoon the first-ever downtown Laurel Mardi Gras parade rolled below our windows. I was amazed by the turnout. SO MANY PEOPLE came to see it.

Can I just say how much I love a man who somehow inherently “knows” things (like how to run electrical wiring to new wall sconces) and how to build and do things with his hands? He didn’t go to school for it or anything, he has a history degree… But he just KNOWS stuff. I wish y’all could all know him. You’d love him, too.

And then I got to work making spaghetti and meatballs for my brother’s early birthday celebration at our house tonight.

Growing up, Mammaw always made her spaghetti and meatballs for my, Jim’s and Clark’s birthdays. It’s been so many years since she made them, but Clark never got over that particular Italian infatuation. It so happens that it’s one of the only meals I feel like I make really well, and I really really enjoy making, so… Dinner at our house! And John Walker came!

He won’t let you hold him for long, but it’s the sweetest thing when you get to for a second.

  1. Wow, your mom looks so effortlessly chic. Well done her! And Big Ben does seem to know what he's doing, even if he didn't learn for it… I think we've seen enough examples the last couple of years of what he's capable of and I personally stand amazed.

Walker starts to look so grown up, too. Not really, but you know what I mean 😉 He and Clark look alike, which is wonderful!

    • Oh gosh, she'll be delighted you called her 'effortlessly chic!' And isn't it the sweetest that Walker looks a bit like Clark? Love them.

  2. The renovations are looking so good! I'm trying to figure out which room is Ben's office?

Your meatballs and sauce are amazing!! Garrett and I both agree that it was one of the best meals of our trip. I've been trying to find tarragon vinegar to make that salad dressing recipe that you had, but couldn't find it anywhere so I figured out how to make it myself and it's steeping in our pantry right now. Can't wait to give that dressing a try!

  3. Yes! Ben's office is also the sample room, if you remember that. We're thinking of moving the big letter file into the hallway now to give him a little more room. And you know, I bet if you just used white vinegar it would be about the same… Did I give you the full recipe when you were here? I'll text it to you if you need it. AND YOU DO NEED IT.

  4. A lil late reading, like always… But I had to tell you the pic of you and your mom in this post made my eyes tear up. It's such a great pic. You're both beautiful but that's not what makes this photo great….There's something in your eyes and embrace and your smile. Something underlying and unsaid…. but still obvious. Something beautiful and priceless. I love that you have what I once had 🙂

    • Oh Nikki. It always makes my heart smile when you pop in every once in a while. I'm going to send up a little prayer for you right now, because even though it's been a while, I know that kind of loss never goes away.
