#1,293 C'est La Vie.

It’s been so long since I went to C’est La Vie, the French bakery in Hattiesburg. We don’t often have a reason to make the 30 mile drive to Hattie, but this is a perfectly good one. This morning I woke up with my usual croissant craving, and I made an executive decision to go to the bakery since it’s Friday and no one’s going to get on to me if I’m late to work.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tasted an almond croissant with a little bit of Italian buttercream on the side, but you need to. It tastes like heaven and also like you might die from it. Exhilirating. It’s not as popular as its cousin, the garish chocolate croissant with its fancy drizzles and rich filling. This is flaky and chewy and the almond oil in the dough tastes just the slightest bit like cherry. They’re dusted with just a touch of powdered sugar and it melts in your mouth even at room temperature. Oh, law.

It was one of those days when I’m acutely aware of the feeling of working to live and not living to work. I’m excited by every order we receive, but the want for money doesn’t run my life. Doing things, learning things, seeing things, tasting things, knowing people is what life is for. I was missing all of it when I worked in the cubicle. I’m realizing the older I get that work is what pays for the croissants, but life is about eating that croissant.

I bought the last 2 they had, and ate one right there. There’s another one in the kitchen…

Also, the way Ben sleeps makes me laugh.
