#1,273 Go Outside.

Go ahead and click this link and start this song.

Today was the most perfect summertime day possible. I spent it entirely outside.

Late, lazy breakfast on the porch.

Cuttin the grass.

Unexpected (short) storm.

Sun’s back out, so a ride in the back of Ben’s truck to go swimming.

And as if that weren’t enough, I watched a little bit of Head Above Water, maybe the most influential movie for interior design in the history of my life. It’s an indy movie from 1996 and Cameron Diaz was just a girl, it’s pretty cheesy, but it’s set in THE most unbelievable seaside Maine cottage. It was my favorite movie in 7th grade when I started my someday house inspiration file. If I could find images online or if I could take screenshots and show you, it would blow your mind. I noticed so many things that obviously inspired the way I wanted our house to be, that I’ve been storing away in my memory since I was 12 years old.

If you can find it, just watch enough of it to see that dang house. You can see a tiny clip of it here. Oh, readers. Do you any of you live in Maine? Can I come visit you?

Update: Hooked on Houses did a feature on my dream cottage!! Finally!

  1. Funny you mentioned that house! I watched that movie for the first time on cable last summer and fell in love with the house too! I couldn't believe I had never seen the movie before. I agree with you. It is such a fabulous quaint cottage. Makes you want to be there. It's a funny movie too. I just showed the porch bed that your husband made to mine and just love it every time I see it. How do you keep your mattress and linens from getting mildewed in the south? I live in GA and everything has to be made of that outdoor material to hold up against the humidity.

    • So glad someone out there has seen it besides me! It has basically no internet existence so I can't even show pictures here. Lame! Regarding the porch bed, we got a regular twin mattress and put a waterproof cover/bag thing on it, and my mama made the ticking stripe cover (it's just like a fitted bedsheet) from regular fabric. We just take it off and wash it with bleach anytime we wash a load of whites, and it's holding up really well!

  2. Thanks so much for letting me know about the fabric holding up. By the way, you can order that movie on Amazon.com. I have it in my library! I just saw a great movie (rental) this weekend and want to purchase it now too. It's called Safe Haven. Go check it out if you haven't already. Really good!
